How to unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch

Welcome to the first in the Go Ninja How To series. In this article we will show you how to use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac, a useful hack if you hate typing in your password over and over again.

Check if your hardware is eligible

You will need to be running a Mac (Mid-2013 or later) with macOS High Sierra or later. Both your Watch and your Mac need to be signed into iCloud using the same Apple ID.

Tip: To check how old your Mac is simply click on the Apple menu in the top left hand corner of your screen and select About This Mac.

Turn on Auto Unlock

1.) On your Mac, select Apple Menu > System Preferences

2.) Click on Security & Privacy and then on General.

3.) Select the “Allow Apple Watch to unlock your Mac” checkbox.

Note: If you don’t have two-factor authentication turned on, follow the on screen instructions then try clicking the checkbox again. Your Mac must have Bluetooth and WiFi turned on.

System Preferences Menu with Checkbox
Select the "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac" checkbox.

Unlock your Mac

To unlock your Mac, make sure you’re wearing your Apple Watch and simply wake your Mac – no need to enter your password.

Note: Make sure your Apple Watch is on your wrist and unlocked.
