Facebook announces Shops helping small businesses sell online.

Facebook recently announced its new e-commerce platform Shops via livestream on Mark Zuckerburg’s page. The new service aims to help more small businesses sell online easily using their existing business pages on Facebook and Instagram.

According to Facebook Newsroom the company said:

“We want to give people a place to experience the joy of shopping versus the chore of buying. And we want to help small businesses adapt and make it easier for people to discover and shop for things they love.

Right now many small businesses are struggling, and with stores closing, more are looking to bring their business online. Our goal is to make shopping seamless and empower anyone from a small business owner to a global brand to use our apps to connect with customers. That’s why we’re launching Facebook Shops and investing in features across our apps that inspire people to shop and make buying and selling online easier.”

Build an online store for free

Facebook Shops makes it easy for businesses to setup a single online store that customers will be able to access via Facebook and Instagram. Creating the store is free and the company promises that the setup will be simple empowering millions of small businesses to create their own. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalog and then customize the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colors that showcase their brand. This means any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it’s convenient for them.

Customers can find Facebook Shops on a business’ Facebook Page or Instagram profile, or discover them through stories or ads. From there, you can browse the full collection, save products you’re interested in and place an order.

Customer support baked in with WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram Direct

Should a potential customer have a query or require more information on a product they will be able to interact with the business by using either WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct to ask questions, get support, track deliveries and more. Facebook has also promised future support for direct purchases within any one of its messaging platforms.

Facebook Shops roll-out and features

The company has started rolling out Shops in the US and will launch in other regions over the next few months. We will update this article as soon as the service is available in South Africa.

Looking forward, the company has promised new features across their ecosystem including Instagram Shop, live shopping and more that will seamlessly integrate with Facebook Shops to help customers discover products they’re interested in and make purchasing easier.
